Teach your children Responsibility -Part3

Flower_2

 Responsibility towards home and parents:

It is usually seen in most of the homes that children are busy watching television or playing while parents are doing all the household work.

Myths involved:
Myth 1:

Parents think that the children are too small to be involved in the household work .

Myth 2:

Children are already doing so much of work and are so much stressed and burdened by their study schedules so why burden them more???

But, the reality is that involving children in household tasks doesn’t take much of their precious time. On the other hand, they get a change from the monotonous life style and they feel more bonded and responsible towards home.

A small sample to show the Activities and Ways to teach them resposibility

  • They can be made responsible for laying down table during meals and clearing the area after meals.
  • They can take up the responsibility of cutting salads and veggies.
  • If your child, while sitting and happily watching television, calls you to give him a glass of water or an apple, encourage him to help himself fetch the water or wash and peel the apple for himself.
  • While gardening give him some responsibility such as sowing new seeds or pruning of plants etc.
  • When the child comes back from school, college etc. encourage him to keep all his belongings in proper place.
  • Once a week encourage him to clean his cupboards and storage areas .He should be encouraged to keep his play area, study area and room clean.
  • When someone at home is unwell or is taking rest, he should be taught to show a responsible behaviour .

How to prepare during preparatory holidays:

vib12

Students should concentrate and make the most of their study holidays or the preparatory holidays.

•The best way to prepare themselves for exams is to solve previous years question papers as though they were attempting at a real exam. This gives them confidence of attempting the exams and they don’t feel that they are doing something different while appearing for exams.

Note: This activity of solving previous years question papers should be done only after the child has covered all the syllabus and has revised all the concepts otherwise it may cause more harm than benefit.

•They should make a detailed plan as to how they are going to do the preparation. They should first target at preparing the chapters that have been marked important by their teachers and carry more weightage in terms of marks distribution in their exams. They should make time-table for themselves and maintain a checklist of the things they have already covered . Checklist will give them an insight into as to how their preparation is going on.

A word of caution: The time tables they make should be realistic and doable (it means they should be able to do things as per timetable). While making time tables they should not be overenthusiastic to overcommit themselves otherwise time table may create unnecessary stress for them.

•Students should take regular breaks while studying. Breaks can be in the form of listening to music or doing some yoga exercise or pranayama or going out for a light walk or indulging themselves in any activity except watching television or playing video games that they enjoy doing (as video games and television are addictive and once they are on it they don’t get up at the stipulated time period).

•Student should ensure that they keep stress under control , keep themselves hydrated and take appropriate diet (check on the article “ What kind of food a student should be eating” ) especially before tough exams.Students should not give up on human interaction completely as interacting with others is de-stressing.

•Students generally tend to study late hours or don’t sleep well just before the exam. This practice is not good as they may feel fatigued during the exam and may not be able to concentrate fully or use their mental energies fully during the exams.

•Students should avoid learning new concepts or chapters at this moment. They should concentrate their energies on revising all the chapters and concepts they already have done so that they are thorough with them.

•Students can take help of parents or other siblings while revising especially the important points or formulas or chemical reactions. The helper can quickly go through the material where help is required during revision and help out.

•They should be giving themselves positive affirmations such as –
“Yes, I can do it”
“I am well prepared”
“I am focused”
“I am going to do Well”
Think Positive

It is not easy to take cold water bath in the morning. If children are encouraged to take cold water bath in the morning it helps to make them mentally strong as it requires a lot of will power to go through any experience that is not pleasant. Remember early sages, the first thing they used to do in the morning was to take a dip in cold river water. It helped them to elevate spiritually. In tough trainings like military training they don’t allow warm or hot water bath in view of making trainees mentally strong.

When we put cold water on body the veins constrict leading to heavy and deep breathing which results in more intake of oxygen in the body. It gives somewhat same effect as a strenuous exercise.

9. Lastly, it improves skin and hair shine by maintaining body moisture

Points to be taken care of:

1. Let the shift from hot to cold water bath be gradual. Let the child bathe with lesser hot water than his body is attuned to .Let his body settle down to this temperature .Then lower the temperature further down gradually leading to luke warm water and finally shift to cold water bath.

2. It is always better to start bathing with cold water bath from lower part of the body from feet to legs .

3. If your child has some specific ailment then better take advice of a doctor before shifting to cold water bath.

4. Cold water bath should not be taken immediately after any kind of physical exercise. It is advisable to let the body come to its normal temperature before taking cold water bath.

5. Body should not be exposed to cold water for too long.
